Having the knowledge that people had gone to the same place before me and done what I would be doing also made the whole thing a lot less daunting.

Why did you decide to study abroad?
A number of reasons led to me choosing to do a course with a year abroad. Not only did I think it would make it more interesting to have modules relating to China whilst I was in Sheffield, but by choosing a course with a mandatory year abroad I would have to leave my comfort zone and live in a place that I likely may not have had the chance to. Chinese culture always interested me, more so since I have been to China and seen it all for myself. I have been able to learn a new language, experience a different culture, visit places I may never have been able to visit, travel with my friends, explore local spots and meet new people. I knew all of the experiences and memories that would come of the year would be good for me and be a brilliant opportunity to grow and see new things. I may have been too hesitant to travel so far if studying wasn't involved, so doing it through university was the perfect way to unlock so many new experiences! Having the knowledge that people had gone to the same place before me and done what I would be doing also made the whole thing a lot less daunting.
What were your top three highlights whilst studying abroad?
1. Travelling! I would never have had the chance to visit China let alone so many different towns and cities whilst there if I hadn't gone there to study. It felt like I was leaving my comfort zone at first, but having seen so many amazing places I am so grateful to have had the chance to explore China and even other countries nearby.
2. Day-to-day life. I've become very comfortable living in Shanghai. Although its super different from anywhere in England, simple things like the metro, the local cafes, and the pretty landmarks have all made each day so exciting. Finding my place in Shanghai and creating a little life here has made me feel independent and has been rewarding in proving to myself that I am capable of finding comfort in a place so far away. The flexible university schedule has also allowed me to explore as much as I have, both in and out of Shanghai.
3. Seeing traditional Chinese culture. Even just in Shanghai, I have seen traditional gardens, old streets, temples, and tried tons of traditional food. It reminds me why I was so excited to go to China in the first place, especially when I was often surrounded by skyscrapers and modern cityscapes.
What would you say to someone who was unsure about spending a period abroad?
As well as being incredibly fun, it helps you grow as a person. I used to think this was an over-exaggeration, but since moving to China and having to navigate it with little to no help I have been able to do things I didn't think I could. Everything from booking trips in a foreign country, to sorting out important documents for my stay has let me prove to myself that I am very much capable and independent.
Also, just the sheer amount of experiences I have had has made it so worth it. I've been to the theatre, visited Michelin star restaurants, spoken to people from more unique backgrounds than I ever could have imagined. If you're not someone who likes doing many activities then just being in a foreign country is an experience in itself. As I mentioned, my confidence and independence have grown, I have discovered so many things, big and small, about another culture (even going to the supermarket feels like a unique experience!). The year flies by and every moment, whilst they aren't all perfect, is a new experience and very much worth it.
What is the one thing you wish you'd known before you left?
How quickly it goes by! When I first started university, the year abroad felt like it was ages away. When I arrived in China, a year felt so long. Having completed a semester however, I now understand that it goes by so quickly. You can still fit so much in, but remember if there is anything you want to do, just go ahead and do it!
