If you wish to be part of a diverse and supportive community, then the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield is a fantastic choice

How did you first hear about your scholarship?
I was recommended to apply for this scholarship by my sister, who was a winner of the same award in the previous academic year. The scholarship offered a fantastic opportunity to reflect on my ambition to study Physics at the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield, as well as to research more about what was offered by the department and the community at the СŷÊÓƵ.
I remember counting the days to the decision date and anticipating the outcome, it feels good to be recognised for your achievements, especially when it allows you to pursue your dreams and ambitions.
What made you choose to study at Sheffield and your course?
Strong industry links and an apparent desire to stand out as one of the leading research institutions globally, paired with a vibrant international community, made the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield a compelling choice. Moreover, the structure of the undergraduate physics course allowed for a high degree of personalisation when it comes to selecting modules, and with organisations such as the White Rose Industrial Physics Academy, you are presented with employment opportunities from the first year at Sheffield.
How did you research the СŷÊÓƵ to find out about studying in Sheffield?
As an international student, my research on the СŷÊÓƵ was limited to online resources, however, I found it particularly useful to attend the Virtual Open Days held by the members of faculty and current students, as I was able to participate in the Q&A sessions. In addition, СŷÊÓƵ’s website offers a wide range of information, both regarding specific departments and the overall experience on campus. I was very impressed with the number of student-run communities that are part of the Sheffield Students Union.
What are you enjoying about your first semester?
Making new friends from various backgrounds that share similar interests to me, and engaging with the interactive and enthusiastic lectures, which range from regular classes to hands-on experiments in the laboratory, held by professors that have a clear passion for their fields and teaching. The city of Sheffield has many beautiful green areas, and Weston Park, just above the Firth Court, is my favourite place to relax in-between lectures.
How has (or will) the scholarship benefit your studies?
This scholarship has helped relieve some of the financial burdens of studying at a university, which allowed me to feel more relaxed before starting my studies and it made the process of moving to the UK that much easier.
What advice would you give to a student considering studying at the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield?
Take advantage of the online resources, get involved with presentations and events organised by the СŷÊÓƵ and talk with current students about their experiences. You will quickly discover that it is not difficult to feel part of the СŷÊÓƵ’s community, there are clubs and societies for everyone. Any university can sometimes feel overwhelming, thankfully at the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield, there are plenty of resources dedicated to student wellbeing, whether this relates to your studies or not. If you wish to be part of a diverse and supportive community, then the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield is a fantastic choice.
What do you hope to do in the future?
I hope that I can use the knowledge I obtained at the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield to be part of a global project that helps the world meet its target to become a carbon-neutral society by 2050, by helping implement and promote clean energy.
