Supporting Equitable Publication Models: A Roundtable Discussion

Event details
-
Wednesday 21 May 2025 - 3:15pm to 4:30pm
Description
Academic publishing is shaped by a system of inequalities which significantly impact where and how researchers publish their work. This roundtable discussion will bring together academics, publishers and experts to explore the challenges and opportunities in fostering more equitable publication models, particularly in our respective disciplines and in relation to career progression.
We will discuss issues including:
- The perceived career penalties faced by researchers who prioritise open-access publishers over traditional, ‘prestigious’ ones;
- The financial burden of high article and book processing charges (APCs/BPCs) and their impact on publishing choices;
- Third-party copyright concerns in open-access publishing;
- Innovations in open peer review and the potential of diamond open access journals;
- The relevance of publication practices common in STEM disciplines, such as preprints, for researchers across a range of other disciplines.
This event will be of interest to all those navigating the academic publishing landscape, particularly early career researchers, and will offer a platform to discuss how systemic changes and personal choices can support fairer and more sustainable publishing practices for all.
